The sOUTHERN GOTHIC

A Reading, Writing & Conversation Series (Starts October 1st online)

*Capped at Twelve Participants*

Dates: 1ST OCTOBER-19TH NOVEMBER

7PM-8.30PM (UTC/Irish Standard Time)

This autumn, join us for a curated reading, writing and conversation series exploring one of the most enduring and influential genres of the 20th century, and its iterations in contemporary African American literature.

The Southern Gothic is deeply concerned with the four virtues of wisdom, justice, courage and discipline—and with what happens when these virtues wobble across different settings, characters and relationships.

It is also deeply preoccupied with nature as a living force, which could not be more pertinent in our era of climate catastrophe. In the Southern Gothic, we encounter nature as alive, fragile, threatening, intimate and capable of repair.

This series is for writers, readers and curious people alike. You don’t need to know anything about the genre to take part. Through close reading, discussion and writing, we will consider how literature can help us find what we care about, discover how to express it in language, and think about how that work might reach an audience.
