In this ten-week online masterclass, we will examine the Southern Gothic tradition through stories of haunted landscapes, fractured families, religious fervour, and the enduring legacies of race and history, reading authors from Flannery O’Connor and Carson McCullers to Jesmyn Ward and Maurice Carlos Ruffin.
We will welcome THREE SPECIAL WRITING GUESTS that I will announce over the summer.
Central to the Southern Gothic is the interplay between different forms of nature: the wildness and wickedness of human beings, alongside their remarkable capacity for grace, redemption, and resilience. Throughout the course, we will also consider the intertwined themes of environmental decay and ecological restoration, asking how contemporary Southern Gothic writers reimagine the genre in the age of climate change.
The third component of this course is peer critique. Two sessions will be dedicated to reading and giving feedback on your work in progress.
*And–a new addition to the Masterclass. I will read and provide feedback on 10 pages of your work, with a 30-minute follow-up call to address any questions.*
